Predicted climate conditions and cover crop composition modify weed communities in semiarid agroecosystems

چکیده
The US Northern Great Plains is one of the largest expanses small grain agriculture, but excessive reliance on off-farms inputs and predicted warmer drier conditions hinder its agricultural sustainability. In this region, use cover crops represents a promising approach to increase biodiversity reduce external inputs; however little information exists about how crop mixture composition, climate management systems could impact performance weed communities. 4th cycle crop-wheat rotation, we experimentally increased temperature reduced moisture as expected occur with change, assessed impacts presence composition mixtures termination methods Under ambient conditions, mean total biomass was 43%–53% greater in five species early-season compared seven mid-season mixture, differences were less pronounced (19%–24%). We observed 18 species; 13 occurring 14 fallow treatments. Weed richness diversity lower treatments, shift communities due well manipulations. Overall, results suggest that adoption semiarid agroecosystems requires jointly addressing soil retention goals, challenge further complicated by conditions.

متن کاملCover crop mulch and weed management influence arthropod communities in strip-tilled cabbage.
Cover crop mulch and weeds create habitat complexity in agricultural fields that may influence arthropods. Under strip-tillage systems, planting rows are tilled and preestablished cover crops can remain between rows. In field experiments conducted in Michigan in 2010 and 2011, a preestablished oat (Avena sativa L.) cover crop was allowed to grow between rows of strip-tilled cabbage and killed a...
متن کاملImpact of integrated sheep grazing for cover crop termination on weed and ground beetle (Coleoptera:Carabidae) communities
Cover crops are a suite of non-marketable plant species grown to improve soil quality. They may have additional benefits including reduced weed pressure and enhanced habitat for beneficial arthropods, but they do not provide direct revenue. Integrating sheep grazing for cover crop termination could make the use of cover crops more economically feasible. However, if grazing shifts biological com...
